Tom "On Note"

Worship today is led jointly by David Cowling and Tom Penman, who has been received by the Circuit Preachers Meeting for training as a Methodist Local Preacher. He is currently “On Note”, which means that he shares David's Plan appointments - David having been appointed as his “Mentor”. We assure Tom of our support, both in prayer and helpful feedback, as well as in more practical ways (eg “covering stewarding duties”).

“Church Consultation”

At its meeting on Wednesday, the Church Council (in line with the other Councils in the Circuit) had an initial discussion looking to the future of our own church congregation, the Circuit, District and Connexion in the light of the demands and challenges facing the Church as a whole and in its various parts.

To help our representatives to a Special Circuit Meeting on November 23rd present “the view from Dundee”, the Council has decided to convene an Open Meeting for ALL Dundee Methodists and friends, over and after a faith lunch following worship on Sunday 6th November.

Invitations and further background information will be given out in the near future, but EVERYONE is urged to note this very important date now and to try to arrange attend and share in the conversation, if at all possible.

Saturday 6th August to Friday 28th October 2011 Edinburgh University Library, George Square “Singing the Reformation” Exhibition. The Exhibition will include displays of the famous 8 extant Partbooks, illustrations of the life and work of Thomas Wode (the preserver of this music), the role of psalm-singing before & after the Reformation, and its continuing influence.
Opening times: Monday - Friday 10am to 5pm, closed Saturday and Sunday.
There is now a CD, 'The Wode Collection', which has been recorded by Linn Records, featuring The Dunedin Consort, the viol consort Fretwork, and lutenist David Miller.
Friday 14th October 2011, 12 noon - 1 pm YMCA 151 Brook Street, Broughty Ferry (opposite “M&S Food”) (map) Broughty Ferry Churches Group Christian Aid lunch. Soup (choice from 3 or more) is served with bread & cheese, followed by coffee (plus occasional shortbread!) for £2, in support of this ecumenical aid, relief and development charity. A warm welcome is given to all to come and share food and fellowship regularly or from time to time.
Saturday 15th October 2011, 1 pm St Paul's Cathedral, 1 High Street, Dundee Music at St Paul's Cathedral: the weekly series of lunchtime concerts continues with music by Sheena Wellington (singer and songwriter) with Karen Hannah (fiddle). Support other Organisations

Scottish Bible Society

Our support through the Bible-a-Month Club is invited in October for Sri Lanka. Our prayerful attention is drawn this week to

  • new youth resources centre in Damascus, the recently-expanded team working in difficult conditions in Syria;
  • expansion of the audio Scripture programme in Zambia, also funding for completion and commencement of translation projects;
  • Bible Shop in Malawi, also audio programmes, translation projects, and local fund-raising initiatives.

Sunday 6th November 2011, 3 pm Meadowside St Paul’s Complex Jane Dawson (John Laing Professor of Reformation History, Edinburgh University) will give a PowerPoint talk on “Singing the Reformation”, followed by a metrical psalm-singing session ('sing through' for choir folk at 2pm - “choristers invited”)
Saturday 19th November 2011, 9.30am to 4pm St Mary's Centre, Kinnoull, Perth “Volunteering in Faith: Obligation or Joy?”
An invitation is extended to ecumenical partners to this Conference organised by the Scottish Episcopal Church's Church in Society Committee. The Keynote Speaker, Anne Morrissey, is a free-lance community theologian, lecturer and author, who has worked in the social responsibility field for many years. There will also be interactive and creative workshops on aspects of volunteering.

Saturday 19th November 2011, 9.30am to 4pm St Peter's Free Church, St Peter Street, Dundee SOLAS Conference, on the theme “Being Human”, with speakers addressing issues of Human Freedom, Human Communication, and Human Sexuality.
